Charleswood Remodel
This large-scale remodel of a character home on a picturesque lot nestled deep within the Charleswood neighborhood of West Fargo showcases thoughtful design solutions tailored for family living. Challenges within the existing layout inspired creative approaches that preserved the home’s original charm while introducing modern functionality and updated finishes. Two and a half floors were completely remodeled, with all interior fixtures and finishes thoughtfully updated or replaced.
KITCHEN
This kitchen’s stunning river and wooded backyard views guided the design, with a focus on preserving sightlines and improving flow. A crowded dining area and redundant seating space were reconfigured to create a more open, functional layout.
Removing the arch and columns allowed for a larger island with seating for six and expanded space for modern, family-friendly appliances.
Without a walk-in pantry, tall cabinetry with roll-out storage, additional island drawers, and back-side cabinetry maximize efficiency. Floating shelves and a full-height tile backsplash frame the window, enhancing the connection to the surrounding landscape.
MUDROOM/LAUNDRY
One of the home’s standout features was the oversized laundry and mudroom located just off the garage. While large windows filled the space with natural light, the original layout didn’t fully take advantage of its generous footprint.
Reconfiguring the sink and laundry areas created a more open, efficient work zone. A drop-zone countertop, locker-style bench, and updated storage were added to better support the needs of a busy family, while the second-floor laundry chute was preserved for everyday convenience. Playful finishes bring warmth and personality to the space.
PRIMARY BATHROOM
This expansive primary suite was reworked to introduce a more functional layout and modern amenities while maintaining its grand scale. The former glass block shower was transformed into a light-filled steam shower with a bench and body sprays, while the oversized jetted tub and columns were removed to make way for larger windows and increased natural light.
A new wall now separates the bedroom and bathroom for a more contemporary feel, with a sliding barn door allowing the three-sided fireplace to remain a focal point. A sleek soaking tub, floating shelves, and a spacious vanity with generous storage complete the space, creating a calm, spa-like retreat.
SECOND FLOOR BATHROOM
This second-floor bathroom was redesigned to better support a busy household, adding a tub and improving functionality for multiple children using the space at once.
By borrowing a small portion of closet space from the adjacent bedroom, the layout was reworked to include a separate tub/shower and toilet area, allowing multiple routines to happen simultaneously.
Bright, updated finishes elevate the space, while durable materials—such as LVT shower tile and classic subway tile—were selected for easy maintenance. Thoughtful storage solutions maximize every inch, and a child-friendly sink with dual faucets accommodates shared morning routines. A discreet cabinet conceals the laundry chute leading directly to the main-floor laundry room.
FRONT ENTRY
A key challenge of this renovation was preserving the sense of grandeur upon entering the home. While the existing staircase felt dated, its scale and architectural presence made it worth refining rather than replacing. A budget-conscious refresh—including updated paint, simplified detailing, and refined trim—gave the staircase a more modern look. New carpet and laminate flooring carried onto the stair risers further elevated this striking focal point.
The living room fireplace was also updated with a clean, contemporary design and new mantel. Painting the trim and walls in a single, cohesive color enhances the feeling of openness and reinforces the home’s grand character.
OFFICE
Perched at the top of the staircase, this spacious office already offered breathtaking river views. A cost-conscious refresh—including updated flooring, lighting, and painting existing cabinetry/trim/French doors—provided a simple facelift that transformed the space into a truly dream-worthy home office.
BAR/THEATER
The basement theater room already had a fun, distinctive character that was preserved throughout the update. Removing an oversized, awkwardly shaped closet made room for a new bar complete with multiple TVs, a sink, and a mini fridge. A custom bar top, brick backsplash, accent carpet, and dark, moody paint on the walls and ceiling transform the space into an inviting, family friendly entertainment destination.
